Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is among the classical engineering branches that is expected to increase its popularity in the long run. Considering that above 80% of global trade in goods is carried by sea and new fuel-efficient ships need to be designed and built for less pollution, the demand for naval architects will always be high and is expected to grow in the near future. A Naval Architect is a professional engineer who is responsible for the design, construction and repair of marine vessels including: Merchant ships, Ferries, Warships, Offshore platforms, High Speed Craft, Workboats, and Yachts.
A Naval Architect’s main job is to integrate the activities of a team of professional engineers and architects within a broad range of disciplines and to take ultimate responsibility for the overall project. This demanding leadership role requires managerial qualities and ability to bring together and balance the often-conflicting demands of the various professional engineering disciplines involved to produce a ship.
In addition to this vital managerial role, the Naval Architect also has a specialist function in ensuring that a safe, economic, and seaworthy design is produced. To undertake all these tasks the Naval Architect must have an understanding of many branches of engineering and must be in the forefront of high technology areas such as computer aided design and calculation. He or she must be able to utilize effectively the services provided by scientists, lawyers, accountants, and businesspeople of many kinds.
Once a bachelor’s degree in naval architecture is obtained, job opportunities exist in a variety of industries, including the commercial shipping, military, and offshore oil and gas industries. A naval architect may work in shipbuilding companies, design firms, research or government agencies.
