The faculty is at Tuzla, Istanbul campus.

The Maritime Faculty at Piri Reis University is a specialized institution where deck and engineering department officers of the merchant navy are educated and trained.

In the Deck Department, deck officers are trained in a program leading to the degree . Bachelor of Science in Maritime Transportation and Management”, whereas the Marine Engineering Department trains engineering officers leading to the degree “Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering Operations”.

Degrees and certificates issued by the Piri Reis University’s Maritime Faculty are fully compliant with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW standards) set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The faculty is both monitored by the Undersecretariat of Maritime Affairs of the Turkish Government and the Council of Higher Education of Turkey. The program also incorporates the seagoing training phase required by STCW, so the graduates are both awarded a Bachelor of Science degree and fulfill the educational requirements of STCW Deck and Engineering Officers, both at the operational and managerial level.

The operational level certified by a state-administered examination permits the graduate to reach the 2nd Officer (Third Engineer Officer) position after the required seagoing service, the students can take further examinations to reach the positions at management level (First Mate and Master for the deck department and Second and Chief Engineer Officer for the engineering department).

Besides the seagoing jobs, experienced graduates are highly desired as the administrative personnel of shipping and marine-related companies, while marine engineers can also find attractive jobs in shipbuilding, power generation and tourism industries.

Faculty of Maritime Student Attire

Article 24 – (1) Maritime Faculty students shall wear professional uniforms in accordance with the relevant regulations.

(2) Students registered in the first and second semesters shall wear first-year class insignia; students registered in the third and fourth semesters shall wear second-year class insignia; students registered in the fifth and sixth semesters shall wear third-year class insignia; students registered in the seventh and eighth semesters shall wear fourth-year class insignia, and preparatory class students shall wear preparatory class insignia on their uniforms.”

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON SEAFARER “FIT FOR DUTY” HEALTH REPORT

Based on the “Conditions and Explanations of Higher Education Programs Included in Table 3 and Table 4 (Part 2 Conditions)” (kkilavuz27072023di.pdf (osym.gov.tr) page: 594) the following criteria are applicable for prospective students to the faculty of maritime programs:

“In order to enroll in this program, students;

must fulfill the legal requirements related to enrollment, acceptance, and health conditions in Educational Institutions as specified in the Regulation on Seafarers and Pilot Captains and the Directive on the Training and Examination of Seafarers and Pilot Captains.
are required to obtain the “Seafarer “Fit for Duty” Health Report” approved at the Health Examination Center in accordance with the procedures and principles determined in the Seafarer Health Directive published by the General Directorate of Border and Coastal Health and obtain the Seafarer Health Check Certificate.

BACKGROUND

The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) sets the standards of competence for seafarers internationally.

One key STCW Convention provision requires Parties to provide information to allow others to check the validity and authenticity of seafarers’ certificates of competency.

For maritime training institutes worldwide, IMO has also developed a series of model courses which provide suggested detailed teaching syllabus and learning objectives to assist instructors develop training programs to meet the STCW Convention standards for seafarers.

The STCW Convention requires Parties to maintain registers of certificates and endorsements for masters and officers and to make information available on the status of such certificates and endorsements to other Parties and companies which request verification of the authenticity and validity of certificates produced to them by seafarers seeking recognition of their certificates.

In Türkiye, the ministry of transportation and infrastructure has the authority to grant these certificates to Turkish people. The international students must get their certifications in their own countries.

If they cannot get these certifications in their countries, they cannot continue their education at Piri Reis University (PRU). Hence, they cannot get a diploma.

OFFER

PRU is going into a collaboration with the Transport Malta, an open flag state, through Xone Maritime Academy to facilitate the acquiring of these certificates for its international students if they succeed in the exams and become eligible to be granted the certificates (MaltaCoCXone.STCW.Concept).

The international students will have to pay $7,900 if they agree to take this opportunity, to be paid over the period of their total education at PRU which covers four (4) years. Prolonged years of education are subject to an additional fee of $2,000/year. Fees are subject to change depending on the expenses, inflation rates and other unexpected causes, not to be changed during their education of already enrolled students.
